To prepare for intense storms, planning is needed before, during and after help reduce the stress and fear during these chaotic times.\u00a0 Here is a great preparedness guide from the city of Miami to help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before the Storm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have your Family Disaster Plan in Place.<\/li><li>Trim your trees and remove loose debris before Storm Season begins.<\/li><li>Bring in or secure patio furniture.<\/li><li>Turn off or unplug any non-essential electrical equipment.<\/li><li>Put up shutters or plywood on windows and doors.<\/li><li>Check to make sure Disaster Supply Kit is complete (see following pages).\u00a0<\/li><li>Do not put out trash or debris for pick up once a Hurricane Watch or Warning is issued. Any trash or debris must be brought in and\/or secured until after the storm.<\/li><li>If you are asked to evacuate, do so ASAP!<\/li><li>Make arrangements for pets if you are going to a shelter that does not allow them.<\/li><li>Make arrangements with your neighbors or management company or post your preparation status on one of several building <a href=\"https:\/\/mycoop.com\/product\">communications<\/a> tools.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/mycoop.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/29dorian-briefing03alt-articleLarge-v2.jpg\" alt=\"Close storm windows\" class=\"wp-image-1409\"\/><figcaption>Close Storm Windows<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>During the Storm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stay indoors until the all clear\u009d is issued.<\/li><li>Keep a battery-powered radio with you so you can listen for\nupdates and tracking of the storm.<\/li><li>In case of broken windows, or damage to your home, retreat to\nyour safe room and take cover.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>After The Storm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be aware of new safety issues created by the disaster. Watch for washed out roads, contaminated buildings, contaminated water, gas leaks, broken glass, damaged electrical wiring, and slippery floors.<\/li><li>Keep a battery-powered radio with you so you can listen for emergency updates and news reports.<\/li><li>Use the phone only to report life-threatening emergencies.<\/li><li>Stay off the streets. If you must go out, watch for fallen objects; downed electrical wires; and weakened walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks.<\/li><li>Use caution when assessing the damage to your home and property.<\/li><li>When clearing debris, please remember to separate natural vegetation from regular garbage to facilitate the clean up process.<\/li><li>Once you have assessed the damage, contact your insurance company and\/or FEMA if appropriate.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please remember to stay safe during these turbulent times and properly prepare for intense storms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With Hurricane Dorian and many more to come hitting the coast, it is important to be prepared for the worst.
